Ferren Gipson

Associate Lecturer

Ferren Gipson is an Associate Lecturer at The 91制片厂 Institute of Art and a doctoral researcher at SOAS, University of London. Her research area is modern art, with a particular interest in Chinese political visual culture, art by women, and topics exploring the crossover between pop culture and art. Her research can be found across books, articles, interviews, video, and the visual arts podcast Art Matters. She authored聽Women’s Work: From Feminine Art to Feminist Art (2022) and聽The Ultimate Art Museum (2021), and her writing can occasionally be .

Ferren is also an practicing textile artist. Her work聽explores themes of matrilineal connections, materiality, Black American spirituality and colour. Her quilting practice is part of her investigations of lost ancestral connections and research on Black American spirituality.

Ferren has also taught for SOAS University of London and delivered lectures at the Royal Academy of Arts and Sotheby鈥檚 Institute of Art. She regularly delivers talks on a range of art and visual culture topics, previously working with institutions including TEDx, Tate, the Association for Art History, and more.
